John Merricks Sailing Trust
Without financial support from other people, 1996 Olympic 470 Silver Medallist, John Merricks would never have been able to fulfil his ambitions and demonstrate his remarkable talent for sailing. Set up by those closest to John following his untimely death, The John Merricks Sailing Trust seeks to help other young sailors (under 25) achieve their goals. Since 1997 the John Merricks Sailing Trust, a registered charity, has supported youth sailing by awarding grants to deserving individuals, clubs and youth organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to sailing and financial need. The John Merricks Sailing Trust is proud to be Supporting Youth Sailing in the United Kingdom.
Mind
Mind has been speaking out for better mental health for 60 years and is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales. At Mind, we work for a better life for everyone with experience of mental or emotional distress.

Rooster Sailing Irish Sea Challenge

Fundraiser:

Laser sailors Steve Cockerill and David Summerville are embarking on the challenge of a lifetime as they prepare to sail Laser dinghies across the Irish Sea from Dublin, Ireland to Southport, England, a distance of 115 nautical miles, in order to raise vital funds for leading mental health charity Mind and the John Merricks Sailing Trust.

They are now busy preparing for this epic challenge, both in terms of physical fitness and boat preparation. Steve is also providing input relating to clothing through Rooster Sailing, and David is preparing the boats for the rigours of the challenge through Phoenix Marine.

Equivalent to the distance from London to Sheffield, The Irish Sea Challenge will be a gruelling sail across a treacherous stretch of water, notorious for unpredictable winds and strong tidal currents. Additionally there are at least 30 species of shark in these waters, plus  swarms of jellyfish, including the deadly Lion’s Mane jellyfish, which is prevalent in August and September, all an added incentive not to capsize the Laser and fall into the water……

Steve and David are aiming to raise £50,000 through the event and have a number of fundraising activities planned to boost the coffers of the charities, including a 30 mile race through the Solent, from Poole Harbour to Southampton Water.

Funds raised will help the leading mental health charity Mind continue its vital work with the 1 in 4 people who experience mental health problems. The Mind info line is a lifeline to thousands of people, offering free confidential support to people in crisis, who might otherwise have nowhere else to turn. In addition, funds raised for the John Merricks Sailing Trust will help many young sailors and youth sailing organisations to achieve their goals and fulfil their dreams.
