MS Society
The MS Society is the UK's largest organisation dedicated to supporting the 100,000 people, their families and carers affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults and is usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 45. Our key services and projects include a national freephone helpline, support for young people caring for families or relatives with MS, funding a dedicated MRI scanner for the diagnosis of MS, providing award-winning information publications and offering welfare grants for home adapdations and wheelchairs.

My Story:

It has been a desire of mine for a number of years to run a marathon. I was planning to do this during 2011 and so in 2010 I started to think about applying for New York and London marathons. Then daughter number one (Abby) came home and announced that she and Xander would like to get married in 2011! Well as you can imagine that put an end to that years’ plan. I rekindled my passion to go again and apply for both marathons. I had just paid my dues when yes you know the story, daughter number two (Lucy) came home and advised that she and Ric wanted to get married in 2013. Yes I could have been easily put off however I wasn’t and I applied for New York 2013 and London 2014, both of which came back as unsuccessful! Not to be put off I applied to run the London marathon through a charity that has meant a lot to my family, the MS Society (Multiple Sclerosis) – And I was successful for London 2014!

Some may know that MS has had a major affect in my family for the past 25+ years. Three generations of my family have been affected by the plight of Multiple Sclerosis. My sister June (pictured above) started to show early signs of MS when she was 28 years old. Her particular experience has been one of gradual but consistent eroding of her physical condition. Today my sister is paralysed from the neck down and yet she has and continues to be an inspiration to me. Despite her circumstances she defies her predicament and pushes herself to learn new things. With the age of technology she can operate her wheelchair, television and even her computer through the use of a SmartNav software which has a sensor attached to her glasses that allows her to navigate a screen that controls the technology (she recently developed a website). With your help the money raised will help others cope with this disease.
