2010 Virgin London Marathon

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall. Since the first race in 1981, 746,635 runners have passed the finish line and raised more than £400 million for charities and good causes. Last year alone a staggering £47.2 million was raised, making the event a Guinness World Record holder as the largest annual fundraising event on the planet.

What a day!  As promised, I started absolutely last and received a great reception from the marshalls and crowd who hung around to see me get going. Despite the heat and £8 pyjamas (which soaked up the sweat like a sponge!) I finished in 4 hours 24 minutes, passing 10521 fellow runners en route.  So the winner of the champagne is Val!!  She just pipped Sharon with a guess of 10,665.  Sorry Sharon, I should have run a few minutes slower.  WELL DONE VAL!!!

 IN A NUTSHELL:

  • Starting absolutely last at the VLM
  • Running in pyjamas and dressing gown
  • YOU pledge and guess how many runners will be overtaken by the time we get to the finish!

Sadly, poor old Lynsey has had to withdraw from the race after getting really ill and missing lots of training. She'll be there on the day to support Marc!

Lynsey and Marc will be running this years Virgin London Marathon together again, but this year, we're going to make it even harder!

Here's the plan. We will be the last people to start the Marathon. That's right, we're going to wait for every single other runner to head off before we finally get going!

YOUR TASK is to take a guess at how many other runners we can overtake as we wind our way around the 26.2 mile course.

To enter, simply pledge a few pounds and leave a message, along with your guess. The winner will receive a MAGNUM OF HARRODS CHAMPAGNE!! (The picture shows the Magnum next to a normal sized bottle, so you can see how big it is!).

There will be no cheating, as we'll be measured around the course using the microchips on our shoes, so we'll know the exact number the following day.

On top of this, because we're 'Running Late', we'll both be running in pyjamas and dressing gowns. We do however, draw the line at slippers...
