Sheffield Bird Study Group
Sheffield Bird Study Group was formed in December 1972 to serve the interests of birdwatchers in the Sheffield area. The group's recording area, covering twelve 10km squares with the city roughly in the middle, is hugely diverse, stretching north to the outskirts of Barnsley, south to Chesterfield, east to the lowlands beyond Rotherham and Bolsover, and west to the highest tops of the Peak District National Park. We aim to promote an interest in birds in the community, provide something of interest to all levels of birder, co-ordinate fieldwork and recording in the area, and work with and complement the work of like-minded local and national organisations for the benefit of birds. SBSG is registered charity No 510857.

Sheffield Peregrines fundraising page

Fundraisers:
University Of Sheffield

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/sheffieldperegrines

Hi, thanks for visiting our fundraising page!

Please donate and help us learn more about Sheffield’s urban Peregrines, which first nested in 2012 on St George's Church at The University of Sheffield.

In partnership with the Sheffield Bird Study Group, the University installed webcams to provide a panoramic view of the nest platform and nearby perch on top of the church. Over the last five years, 14 chicks have fledged successfully from 20 eggs laid. Over a million visits to the webcams have been made, as people from around the world have followed the highs and lows as eggs were laid, chicks hatched and the juveniles fledged!

Now we’re asking for you to donate so that we can extend the peregrines project by some (or all!) of the following:

  • Installing a camera in a better position to improve our view of the nest
  • Organising talks and events to share our knowledge of the Peregrines with the public
  • Carrying out research, including investigating why some eggs fail to hatch
  • DNA profiling individuals to learn more about the family  relationships of the birds
  • Ringing (and colour-ringing) the peregrine chicks so that we can monitor their activity once they have left the nest and better understand their movements
  • Determining the sex of future peregrine chicks using genetic markers
  • Supporting investigations into wildlife crimes such as shooting or poisoning of birds of prey
  • Arranging for a publication to outline the success of the Peregrine project in its first 10 years

If you would like to know more about the birds, have a look at the Sheffield Peregrines blog, the Sheffield Bird Study Group website or see the webcams.
