Challengers
Imagine a childhood without play. Shockingly, 51% of disabled children and young people are deliberately excluded from play and leisure opportunities. At Challengers we will never exclude a child or young person and we need your help to make this possible. £152 will pay for one child to come to Challengers for a day of fun and laughter. Challengers develops and delivers inclusive play and leisure for disabled children and young people from across Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, West Sussex and beyond. Every penny you donate or raise will make a huge difference. Thank you.
Down's Syndrome Association
Creating the conditions that all people with Down’s syndrome need to live full and rewarding lives.
Stepping Stones DS
Stepping Stones DS provides support, advice and activities for families raising a child with Down syndrome across North Hampshire and the surrounding areas.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Jamie at Sailability 2014Why am I doing this? Hard as it will be to believe, for those of you who know me, what with my boyish good looks and youthful energy, but I turned 50 on the 12th December 2015. So to commemorate this personal milestone I have challenged myself to walk the South West Coastal Path, all 630 miles of it, over the next 24 months (Easter 2015 to Easter 2017) and raise as much money as I can for charity at the same time.

My nominated charities are:

  • Down's Syndrome Association
  • Disability Challengers
  • Stepping Stones DS

Why these charities?

Jamie and Louisa Pembrokeshire 2014Well, over the years since my son was born (he has Down’s syndrome) we have taken comfort and support from the network of people we have come to know through the various activities, groups and charities we’ve become involved with. The above charities have been central in our lives. Please 'mouse-over' the logo's to the left to learn more about each one.

Its important to remember that despite how things seem the world is actually full of good people doing good things all the time - often unsung and unrewarded. We come into contact with more than most because of Jamie. And it's time to give back. Simple really.

Jamie sking in 2014Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to my nominated charities.  Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.  I really appreciate all your support and I really do thank you for any donations.

I will be walking the South West Coastal Path in sections over the next year or so and I'd welcome your company if you can join me for any sections or even just a couple of hours on a section. I am sure the scenery will be breathtaking! So here is a link to my itinerary. Do let me know if you can join me.

Cheers

Austen

UPDATE: Darn it but I went and made this challenge harder by cracking the t8 vertebra in my spine. I did this on 27 April 2015 while celebrating Jamie's 16th birthday. We were at a trampoline park in Camberley. But far from doing anything worth shouting about (no triple back somersaults) all I was doing was some bouncing up and down – we’d only been there 5 mins.

I must have hit the trampoline at the wrong moment and, bang, compression fracture. Very painful! Trip by ambulance to A&E then two nights in orthopedic ward and a CT scan. Plus lots of pain relief medication…

I was off work for nearly six weeks and missed a planed section walk at the end of May. But I am more determined than ever to compete the walk and raise as much as I can for my charities … I will simply adjust my itinerary to make up the time ... somehow. Oh well. These things are sent to try us.
