Salt Of The Earth
Salt of the Earth was founded in 1988 to raise money to help the rural poor in Tamil Nadu, India, through its partner organisation Social Change and Development (SCAD). A wide range of activities is funded including health, education, community projects, water and income generating projects. The aim is to increase the quality of life of families whose income is often less than £250 per year. This year we are supporting the 2011 Rickshaw Run organised by the International Rescue Corps to raise money for our projects.

Loud, uncomfortable and prone to breaking down, so completely unsuitable to travel 5000km across a continent with the worst roads and traffic in the world. Nevertheless, we feel there is a certain charm to be found in the 7hp, 150cc lawnmower of an engine, and therefore will be attempting to travel from Kochin in the South to Shillong in the North East of India come April this year.

I understand this isn't everyone’s idea of spending two weeks of hard earned holiday; a 3 wheeled Rickshaw, no plan, no support, no showers and heaven forbid one of us gets ill...

Apart from our own enjoyment we are raising for some very worthwhile causes, one of which is the nominated Charity SCAD.

SCAD works for the Saltpan workers; small and marginal farmers, landless agricultural labourers, people infected by leprosy, gypsies, snake catchers, and other deserving communities by providing:

  • Education & Health: Medicine & nutritional support for mothers & children, general health education, & eye care.
  • Community Development Programme: women empowerment, agriculture, environment protection, water shed programmes, farmers association, veterinary service, & fisheries.
  • Special Groups: Programmes for disabled children, saltpan workers, gypsy & leprosy colony, snake catchers, including care and support for old age people.
