Charities
Home-Start Cambridge & District offers support and friendship to families struggling to cope with a range of issues from postnatal illness, disability, family breakdown, bereavement, isolation and multiple births. We also help families living with domestic violence and suffering the effects of drug and alcohol related issues. Families are supported by our team of trained and dedicated volunteers who visit the families in their own homes respecting their privacy and dignity, providing non-judgemental practical and emotional support.
Wallace Cancer Care is a registered charity, established in 2004, that aims to meet the needs of cancer patients and their families at a shocking and devastating time of their lives, from the diagnosis of cancer, throughout treatment, and when lives need to be put back together once treatment is over. Wallace Cancer Care runs two fulltime centres; a Drop-In Centre in the main concourse at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and a larger Complementary Care Centre a short walk from the Oncology Centre and Breast Unit in a house at 7 Red Cross Lane. Our two centres provide a warm and welcoming space where support and attention to the practical and psychological needs of cancer patients and those who care for and about them are provided. The Drop-In Centre, staffed by cancer nurses and specially trained volunteers, provides relevant and appropriate information, guidance and direction to national organisations, legal, financial and social support services, and Wallace Cancer Care’s own services. Our Complementary Care Centre, staffed by complementary therapists, counsellors, nutritionists and trained volunteers, provides a calm environment in which patients can relax between appointments at the hospital, take part in a variety of group activities that are designed to empower patients, break down feelings of helplessness and isolation and take control in improving their health and managing side effects, or receive free complementary therapies to reduce stress and improve feelings of wellbeing.
