Angelman Syndrome Support Education And Research Trust
Angelman Syndrome Support Education & Research Trust (ASSERT) is a charity aimed primarily at providing support for families and carers who come into direct contact with individuals with Angelman Syndrome. We primarily support families and carers in the UK, although also have a number of members overseas. We also contribute to research into this rare condition as well as raising awareness with professionals and the general public.

I'm planning to run 50 marathons by the time I'm 50, obviously that's decades's in 2021 so actually less than 5 years away from when I first decided to embark on this challenge in late 2016.

The reason I'm doing this is twofold - firstly, I discovered running (and exercise!) quite late in life and I still can't quite get over the shock of how enjoyable it is and secondly (in contrast to number one) I need a training plan with lots of races in it to stop me being lazy and slacking off!

I love to run with my 10 year old son Elliot accompanying me on his bike. He's also committed to ride a marathon a year with me and between us we decided that it would be good to use the challenge to raise some money for charity. We decided upon ASSERT - a charity that supports people (and their families) with Angelman Syndrome. The brother of one of Elliot's best friends has Angelman so it seemed like an obvious choice to us.

My first marathon was London in 2011 (a year after I started running) and the second was London 2012. Shortly after that I got involved in organising a local trail marathon and as a committee we decided that we really should run our own route to make sure it was a good one! That started my love of trail marathons - a whole different ball game from running on the road and much more enjoyable for a runner like me who is never going to set the world alight with finish times.

I have run London again since then but I definitely enjoy trail marathons best and living in Dorset I'm lucky that they're in plentiful supply!
