Two years ago, myself and a group of my old school mates tried to relive our youth by embarking on a long distance walk… with a twist. The 96 mile Northumberland Inn Way was chosen, 6 days hard slog with 48 pubs on route. I found a pint in each one harder than the walking but it was a great week.

After the walk I decided to keep going and signed up with a personal trainer. He got me running, a kilometre to start with, then 5k, a weekly 5k Parkrun and then East Coast 10k in Great Yarmouth. I found myself surrounded by 100’s of keen, lean and experienced runners, yet didn’t come last, instead finishing mid field.

Last summer I attended a St Dunstan’s (now called Blind Veterans UK) charity event with my mother. My late father went blind later in life following a wartime illness and St Dunstan’s provided him with great support throughout his illness. I sat next to a very enthusiastic fund raising lady who told me about the work of the charity and the many events they fund raise at.

Their tag line is “We at Blind Veterans UK believe that no one who’s served our country should battle blindness alone. That’s why we’re here to help with a lifetime’s practical and emotional support, regardless of when they served and how they lost their sight. We help blind veterans to recover their independence and discover a life beyond sight loss”.

In a moment of madness, I entered the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon to raise money for the wonderful charity. I didn’t think that I would get in, but after a few days I received an email to say my entry had been accepted. Mixed thoughts at this time.

The training went well, with the distances increasing each time, but in November I hit the wall and my knees went. I had to stop running until the new year but I am now back in training, stronger and fitter than ever. It’s going well but 26.2 miles on old legs is a very tough call.

I'm sure you're frequently asked for sponsorships for various causes, but I really will appreciate anything you feel able to give. Apart from going to a great cause cause, it will help me get through the dark, cold nights of training that lie ahead knowing it’ll all be worth it!

Every penny I raise will go to the charity.

Thank you for your support.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.
