Charities
Action on Hearing Loss is the new name for RNID, the charity working to create a world where deafness or hearing loss do not limit or determine opportunity, and where people value their hearing. We work by campaigning and lobbying, raising awareness of deafness and hearing loss, promoting hearing health, providing services and through social, medical and technical research.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an independent international humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency medical aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters or exclusion from health care in more than 60 countries. Every year MSF sends around 3,000 doctors, nurses, logisticians, water-and-sanitation experts, administrators and other professionals to work alongside over 25,000 locally hired staff. Together they run medical projects in more than 60 countries around the world. In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF provides essential healthcare, rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, tackles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centres for malnourished children and offers psychological support. When needed, MSF also constructs wells and dispenses clean drinking water and distributes materials like blankets, plastic sheeting and other basic necessities. Through longer-term programmes, MSF treats patients with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, sleeping sickness and HIV/AIDS and provides medical and psychological care to marginalised groups such as street children. MSF was founded in 1971 as the first non-governmental organisation to provide both emergency medical assistance and bear witness publicly to the plight of the people it assists. MSF is an international network with branches in 23 countries.
WSPA’s vision is of a world where animal welfare matters, and animal cruelty ends. WSPA has been promoting animal welfare for more than 25 years. Our work is concentrated in regions of the world where few, if any, measures exist to protect animals. WSPA’s work is focused on four priority animal welfare areas: Companion animals, Commercial exploitation of wildlife, Farm animals and Disaster management.

Bruce, Russ & Nils' challenge
Trilogy of Courage
- Three ordinary blokes...
- Three impossible Tour de France mountain stages...
- One goal:
- Support three exceptional causes!
Known to embark on the occasional crazy bike adventure, and fuelled by our recent crossing of the Alps in 8 days, we have decided to really put ourselves to the test this time: Doubling both distance and altitude climbed We will be crossing the Pyrenees on bicycles in just 3 days all the way from Barcelona to Lourdes in France. Following the tracks of three of the most gruesome Tour de France stages ever, we will be covering up to 250km (160 miles) a day while climbing 4500m vertically daily, bringing ourselves to the border of our capabilities both physically and mentally:
600km with 12000m altitude climbed in three days !
We are doing this to show our support for three great causes:
1 Medecins sans frontiers (MSF)
Independent of any political, religious or economic powers, MSF are providing crucial humanitarian aid in war-torn regions and developing countries with endemic diseases. With more than 26000 people supporting the organization in 60 countries, the organization believes that all people have the right to medical care regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people outweigh respect for national borders.
2 World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)
Since its foundation in 1953 WSPA has been fighting cruel treatment and abuse of animals. Some of their campaigns include the fight against bear baiting as well as whaling. The organization also aims to provide help and protection for animals that are affected by big natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina or the Japanese Tsunami. A campaign that is very pertinent to our ride is the fight against bullfighting, which is still legal in both Spain and parts of Southern France.
3 Action on Hearing Loss (AOHL)
In the UK, AOHL are providing help and support to a broad spectrum of people with hearing loss: from profoundly deaf people to people that are hard of hearing to people with a hearing loss or tinnitus. Another focus point is the overcoming of the stigma that is attached to hearing loss.
Worldwide AOHL are one of the foremost supporters of biomedical research into the discovery of treatments for hearing loss and tinnitus by providing research grants and PHD student sponsorships.
While we will be putting ourselves through three days of excruciating pain (not counting the days of hard preparation and days of soreness after the ride), you can help us easily from the comfort of your home by donating even the smallest amount to these great causes online. We are hoping to raise a total of 3333 pounds, that is 1111 pounds for each charity.
Help us help them help others !
Thank you,
Bruce, Russ and Nils
