Teenage Cancer Trust
Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. We build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. We want every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live. Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, young people can feel extremely isolated during treatment, some never meeting another young person with cancer. Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference to their whole experience. Teenage Cancer Trust also educates young people and health professionals about cancer to ensure a swift diagnosis and referral to specialist support. Cancer in young people is rare but we want young people to know the common signs and symptoms so they can seek medical advice if they are worried. We rely solely on donations to fund our vital work. You can help transform the lives of young people with cancer. Visit to find out how.

For a young person, a cancer diagnosis seems like entering a wilderness alone – but Teenage Cancer Trust is there with world-class care and support. For the 2,500 young people each year who are diagnosed with cancer, Teenage Cancer Trust offers life-changing cancer services.

To raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust, I’m trekking in the wilderness of Namibia, in the autumn of 2017.

In the Nama language, Namibia means “vast”, and the country, on the west coast of southern Africa, certainly lives up to its name. It is a land of dramatic landscapes, with harsh and inhospitable conditions. Much of it is sparsely populated, although also previously the home to ancient nomadic bushmen – if we are lucky we may see some prehistoric rock paintings. Our group will be trekking through boulder-strewn, arid gorges, and dried river beds. Our trekking camps will be tents set up in the wilderness. We will be trekking about 16km a day, with local guides to lead us up the steep slopes and through the ravines.

In 2016 you helped me raise a stunning £4,520 (about £5,050 with all the Gift Aid) through my trek amongst the volcanoes of Nicaragua – Thank You! There's a report of the trek at  There is still much for this amazing charity to do. There are 28 purpose-built Teenage Cancer Trust units in NHS hospitals across the UK, which are designed to feel more like a home than a hospital ward. They’re comfortable and contemporary, rather than simply clinical. The units form hubs in each UK region – new teams of expert staff increasingly travel to other hospitals and to young people’s homes, to make sure everyone is reached, wherever they live.

As well as being there for young people after diagnosis, Teenage Cancer Trust also spreads the word about the impact of cancer on young people in all sorts of ways: for example, presentations in schools, and helping medical professionals and politicians to understand why young people with cancer need specific support. In addition, the charity publishes a wide range of no-nonsense information resources.

Please support my efforts to help Teenage Cancer Trust build upon its success so far - so that no young person has to face cancer alone.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
