The Gambia Horse And Donkey Trust
The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT) aims to reduce rural poverty through improving the health, welfare and productivity of working equines in The Gambia. It was founded in 2002 to address the increasing problem of poor equine welfare. Keeping equines healthy is challenging in The Gambia, due to the prevalence of disease, poor nutrition, lack of knowledge and poverty. Horses and donkeys are used for both farming and transport in The Gambia and they are an essential part of Gambian farmer’s lives. A healthy animal can increase its owner’s income by 500%, therefore a productive animal results in a healthier family. Poverty is the cause of many of the problems that we see, so we participate in community development projects to improve the local economy as well as providing veterinary services and educational programmes about animal management

My page:

Well we made it, ‘Vets with Horsepower’ has survived another tour:  3500 miles, twelve horse vets on large motorcycles, lectures in 8 countries!

Our goal this year was to conquer the Baltic countries, Western Russia and Scandinavia. 1000 miles of straight, butt flattening, EU funded motorway from Amsterdam to Warsaw (ridiculous Warsaw traffic partially offset by the beautiful early morning swim in a northern Polish lake), drivers in Lithuania insane, Latvia charming, Estonia has unpredictable moose. Russia sadly rejected two of the riders and almost swallowed one in a pot hole, but we managed to get through Finland, Sweden, Southern Norway and finally Denmark unscathed (the 8 km Oersted Bridge is indeed amazing).

Our country hosts were quite wonderful but sadly too many to detail here, but a special mention does have to be made to Norway which raised an eye-watering €20,000!

By supporting these two charities we just saved a whole bunch of donkeys and children, and knowledge of that kept us going through many uncomfortable, mostly tedious, occasionally terrifying, hours on Northern European roads. Will you help us raise £100,000?

With love and thanks,

The Vets with Horsepower team
