Cystic Fibrosis Trust - The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK's only national charity dealing with all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis. It funds research to treat the symptoms of CF and to find an effective treatment. It also aims to ensure appropriate healthcare for those with Cystic Fibrosis and provides information, advice and support to people with CF and their families across the UK. Cystic Fibrosis is one of the most common, life-threatening diseases in the UK. It affects over 9,000 people and 1 in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis. If two carriers start a family, each child has a 1 in 4 chance of having Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus making it hard to breathe and to digest food. People with Cystic Fibrosis have to endure a rigorous daily treatment regime including physiotherapy to clear the chest, inhaled and injected drugs to thin the mucus and fight infections and dozens of enzyme pills to help digest food. Each week, five babies are born with CF and sadly, each week three young lives are lost. Only half of those with Cystic Fibrosis are likely to live past their late 30s, but a baby born today can expect to live longer. We seek to continually improve standards of care for people with CF; we commission cutting-edge clinical and scientific research; and provide practical and accurate information to people with CF and their families. None of this would be possible without the support of the CF community and the generosity of the public.

2013 Bupa Great Manchester Run

Britain's top 10k road race continues to be one of the fastest growing running events in the world; 40,000 runners of all ages and abilities took to the vibrant streets of Manchester in 2012 with bands and crowds lining the route adding to the great atmosphere.

First of all, thank you for visiting our page!

Me (Catrin) and my friend Susan, along with other work colleagues are taking part in the Bupa Great Manchester 10K Run on the 26th of May.

We are fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. This is a charity very close to my heart, as my nephew, Celt was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 5 weeks, he is now 16 months old. As you can imagine, it was a great shock to our family and we never thought anything like this would happen to us. 

Cystic Fibrosis affects many of the organs- but mainly the lungs, the digestive system and can also affect the reproductive system. It is a complex condition which affects every person differently. Celt has the most common mutation of CF which practically affects all of his organs. 

Celt has 2-3 sessions of physiotherapy daily along with a vast amount of medication and frequent trips to the hospital, which is distressing for everyone.

CF affects around 9,500 people in Britain, and as in comparison to some other conditions, it is quite rare, we need more awareness and support to raise money for research to find cure! The age expectancy at the moment is 35, and for Celts parents to hear this, was devastating. But we have become more positive and decided to do whatever we can to help raise funds to find this cure as soon as possible!!
