MISSION The Institute’s mission is to work to prevent the extinction of chimpanzees through conservation, research and education. Wildlife Research studying chimpanzees and other primates. Conservation activities that ensure the long-term preservation of chimpanzee habitat. Education to heighten global awareness of the issues facing wild and captive chimpanzees and to foster an awareness and understanding of the interdependence of all life. Animal Welfare activities to ensure the physical and psychological well-being of chimpanzees and other captive animals. HISTORY Jane Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation internationally in 1977. Initially JGI aimed to provide ongoing support for field research on wild chimpanzees, to help arrest the rapid decline of chimpanzee populations in the wild and to stop their neglect and abuse in captivity. The Institute's mission has now expanded to include conservation and environmental education, reforestation projects, and natural resource management for the purposes of habitat conservation and protection. PROJECTS Sanctuaries, where chimpanzees orphaned by poachers are provided with long-term care and rehabilitation. JGI has sanctuaries in Congo, Uganda and South Africa. Habitats, including the Gombe Stream Research Centre, where Dr Goodall and her staff have observed and documented wild chimpanzee behaviour since 1960, and Kibale Forest National Park. Congo Basin Project, launched by JGI in 2000, it addresses the root social and economic influences that drive participation in the bushmeat trade. TACARE, a reforestation project in western Tanzania, focused on improving the residents’ standard of living while promoting sustainable agriculture, reforestation, curbing soil erosion, and providing educational opportunities for the local population. Roots & Shoots, an environmental and humanitarian education programme for young people.

Walk for Wildlife(Verdala Int. School)
Verdala International School is located on the small Island of Malta in the central Mediterranean. It lies half way between Italy and north Africa. The School itself is situated in the district of Pembroke on Malta. This is on the edge of the urban area that extends out to the west of the capital Valletta. The name Verdala comes from the French Grandmaster de Verdale who led the Order of the Knights of St John from 1582 to 1595. Unique amongst educational institutions Verdala International School is housed in an old fort built by the British in the 1880s. The School also has two former barrack blocks that housed British soldiers until Malta became independent in 1964. The School first opened its doors in 1976 as an oil company school. In the 1980s it was reconstituted as Verdala International School. The School has been an accredited US School since 1994 and started offering the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma in 1995.
During the years between 2002 and 2007 the Middle School at Verdala International School participated in a WWF activity whose main objective was to raise money for endangered species. Better known as the Walk for Wildlife, the students raised over 8000 Euros during those years.
Unfortunately, WWF stopped organizing this international event. Nevertheless, the Middle School has continued with the tradition of raising money for a good cause – especially if that money supports our pro-environmental philosophy. Last year we managed to raise over €2500 for the Amur leopard (only 35 remain in the wild).
This year we have chosen to raise money for the Jane Goodall Institute, since it is her 50th Anniversary of her involvement with chimpanzees. We would like to support the Roots & Shoots Program for young people and all her efforts within the Institute. We hope that this year we will raise a record amount of money for this important cause.
