  • David Weir an inspiration for fundraisers, donors and the next generation

Get Kids Going! Vice President David Weir secured a remarkable ninth Paralympic medal in London on Saturday with the promise of more to come from the Surrey born racer.

David finished in 11 minutes 07.65 seconds, ahead of Australia's Kurt Fearnley and France's Julien Casoli in the T54 5,000m and set a record time of three minutes 12.09 seconds in the 1500m to claim the fourth Paralympic gold medal of his career. He took gold in the T54 800m after a hard fought and very closely contested race.

David Weir’s first wheelchair was supplied by Get Kids Going! and CEO Jane Emmerson said: “I was thrilled to watch David win yet another medal for the British team. He is an inspiration to fundraisers, donors and the next generation of disabled athletes”.

“It is fantastic that fundraising for Get Kids Going has led to athletes being able to challenge for medals at the London Paralympics and I am delighted that people can see first hand the efforts made to get donations for the charity having such a positive affect on the medal count of Team GB.

“Many of the athletes do not have funding from governing bodies or wealthy sponsors and have to rely on the grants and donations offered by charities to ensure that they are in the best shape coming into the Paralympics.”

Get Kids Going! is a National charity which gives disabled children and young people, up to the age of 26, the opportunity of participating in sport. They provide specially built sports' wheelchairs to take part in: athletics, marathons, tennis, skiing, rugby, sailing, boccia, basketball, sledge hockey, table tennis, fencing, shooting, archery, powerlifting and many more sports.

The charity inspires British disabled youngsters to compete in sporting events, from start to Paralympic level, by giving 'sports grants' to help with training, physiotherapy, travel, competition fees, design and development of sports' wheelchairs plus more besides.

Get Kids Going has seen close to £1 million raised on Virgin Money Giving, with fundraisers and donors providing the charity with essential funds to continue their fantastic work with disabled young people.
