Royal run attracts charity runners for a stroll in the park

  • 5th year of the Royal Parks Half Marathon

Sunday 7 October will see the 5th annual Royal Parks Half Marathon take place and competitor numbers are expected to be the highest ever since the event was first held in 2008.

The Royal Parks Half Marathon is now firmly established in the annual running calendar, and has proved highly effective at raising funds to support London’s Royal Parks as well as providing much needed support for a whole range of good causes.

The route takes runners through four Royal parks - Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St James’s Park and Green Park. The 13.1 mile course also takes in some of London’s most famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the Royal Albert Hall.

As well as becoming one of the UK’s premier half marathon events, the Royal Parks Half Marathon is an excellent platform to raise funds for a variety of good causes throughout the UK. Over £11 million has been raised for 365 different partner charities which include such causes as Cancer Research UK, UNICEF as well as the Royal Parks Foundation itself.

The official fundraising partner of the Royal Parks Half Marathon is Virgin Money Giving, which was established to coincide with Virgin Money’s sponsorship of the London Marathon. Over 100,000 fundraisers have raised over £100 million in the 3 years since the site was launched, through a range of activities from cake sales, bungee jumping and abseiling, through to marathons, Ironman events and Guinness World Record attempts.

Last year the event was memorable on two accounts. Firstly, it attracted a record number of entrants with over 12,500 runners from 30 different countries taking part. The event was also awarded the title of Best Outdoor Event in the 2011 Event Awards.
