Cycling for Back-up

Hi everyone

Im planning a 48 mile bike ride on behalf of myself and for the Back-up Charity, coming up to one year since i had a near death accident.

I am fortunate enough to be here and recovering well, July last year i had a fall on my horse which involved my horse landing on top of me and breaking my back. I had to have a very major operation which included releasing my nerves and fixating my pelvis together. It was touch and go wheather i would be walking again. I spent a few weeks in hospital and 4 months in a wheeelchair. I've now recovered well enough to take part in this great bike ride.

But the most important thing is that im here to tell my story and give back to the charity that i became quite familiar with.

They do a great job in helping people with spinal cord damage by making their lives better and easier.

I want to prove to myself, my family and my friends how well i've recovered and also to say thank you for everyones support over the last year they have been the best, considering most of them thought i wouldn't be here to tell my story.
Thank You
Lucy

P.S If you can spare a penny or a pound no matter how little to donate i would be very very grateful. Thank You
Th

AFCO City to City Challenge

It's been a bit of an emotional roller coaster year. Lots of tears, a little laughter, and a huge big thank you needing to be said. So where do I begin.

On returning from Afghanistan 2011, I find out that my father is seriously ill. When I left him in November 2010 he was a "normal" healthy pensioner, doing his upmost to get through his days and enjoy his time on earth. While I am away, working in a foreign culture, trying to get through the long hours, little did I know that his life and my life would change for ever. "Bye bye dad see you soon", would never mean the same again.

My father is now in an ever revolving word of "normal" to seriously ill, not knowing what each day will bring, and how he will manage. I am struggling continously with emotions, legal issues, welfare for dad, and his partner Tricia, while still having to work away Monday - Friday miles away, worrying about dad and praying that he is having a good day.

Thankfully, through all of this there has been one place that I have been able to turn too for help, advice and guidance. As a serving member of the Royal Air Force, and my father an ex serving Airman we both knew about RAF Association, however neither of us have every fully understood or appreciated their work until desperation set in and I picked up the phone. From that initial phone call up too the present day, I have been offered support and guidance as well as welfare support for myself my father. The staff and volunteers at RAF Association have been my rock.

As a small way of saying thank you, and paying back all their good work, I am trying to raise money for in my opinion a worthwhile charity.

Thursday 24 May 2012, Gymnasium RAF Leeming, 14 people will be undertaking 9 hours of Cardiovascular Endurance. Each person will be spending 1 hour on a Treadmill, 1 hour on a rower, and 1 hour on a bike trying to reach a target of 347 miles by land, and 42 miles by water. All I am asking is you help support our challenge, by advertising my story, and hopefully sponsoring our challenge to help the team reach our target.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Senga
:)

Heroes get running for Chance to Shine!

Bananaman, two Batman’s, a Bat Girl, a Robin, A Kick-Ass and a Hit Girl. These were just some of the super-heroes who took on the Heroes Run London(1 April) to raise money for ‘Chance to Shine supported by Brit Insurance’. Despite the warm conditions all eight runners completed the 10Km course around Clapham Common in one piece and in good time.

So far the runners have raised over £1,700 for Chance to Shine and the money continues to come in. The heroes included cricket fans and members of staff from the Marriot Maida Vale.

Speaking after the event, Jo Mackie, Sales Manager at the Marriot Maida Vale, said:

“Myself, Daniella, Stef and Kiana had an amazing time on Sunday and are very proud that we managed to complete the 10K Heroes Run. It is a fantastic personal achievement for all of us, and also we are proud to support Chance to Shine, whose inspiring efforts make such a tremendous difference to young people.”

Claire Hall, Partnerships Development Manager at the Cricket Foundation said:

“We are delighted with efforts of all of our runners. They have done incredibly well in not only getting round but also in raising so much money for Chance to Shine. They truly are heroes!”

If you would like to run in any other event for Chance to Shine please contact us at events@chancetoshine.org
http://www.chancetoshine.org/news/?article=news269

Bath Velo Fellows ride 4000km for Kidney Research UK

Hi,

The Bath Velo fellows are an eclectic mix of West Country sporting veterans who are coming together as part of a super sweet come back tour, in June 2012, to raise funds for Kidney research UK and the renal unit at the Bristol Children’s hospital.
When a family member of one of the team developed chronic kidney failure in 2011, a crash course ensued in the work of the renal team at the Bristol children’s hospital and at the Richard Bright renal centre at Southmead. Six months after a kidney donor operation the cycling began again in earnest with the Cheddar 100K in Oct 2011. This more challenging distance is being undertaken in appreciation of the transplant work and the research being undertaken by Kidney Research UK, and involves the team in a 321km sprint across North West France, with a team total to be covered of 4,000KM.
The 12 riders set off on the 28th June 2012 and will slowly grind out the miles with the eyes set on the prize of making it round in time for the return ferry home. Wives and families will be left behind as the men follow in the footsteps of so many true adventurers before them, and attempt this trail blazing expedition with tents, sleeping mats, their own determination and the best carbon fibre bikes that money can buy!.

group fundraiser page wont update

My Daughter and I both created seperate pages which we have had a donation each so far. we then decided to do a group page which we created with both of our individual pages linked to it. Why doesn't it show the total of our individual pages on it?
Ideally we would like to only have the group page as we then aren't competitive with each other for fundraising and transfer the individual pages over but can't see how to do that either.
Help please!!

Cycle 3000 miles from Southend to St Petersburg and back in 40 days

In July and August, 2012, a friend and I plan to cycle over 3000 miles through 11 countries on behalf of 3 worthwhile charities that help the poor around the world: Cafod, Trocaire and Mary's Meals. CAFOD and Trocaire are Catholic development agencies, that tackle poverty in a number of ways: through education and skills, emergency and long term aid, and through campaigning. CAFOD works with over 500 partners in 40 countries on long-term development projects, with its focus on food, healthcare, AIDS, water, livelihood, education, and social and economic rights. It not only works with Catholic/Church-based organisations, but with secular, Buddhist and Islamic organisations, with its priority on helping the poor wherever they are. I am particularly fond of Mary's Meals objective, which is to provide meals at schools in poor countries, so that the poor don't have to choose between an education and food.

We will begin in Southend, England and after hitching a ferry ride from Harwich to Denmark, will cycle through Denmark, Sweden and Finland, to St Petersburg, Russia and then return by bike on the mainland of Europe, passing through the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), Poland, Germany, and Holland. Months in planning done and still not sure if we can do it.

Please sponsor us a mile or two (or more) at http://www.virginmoneygiving/Melcormican. Our target is £3000, which is £1 for every mile. Raising lots of money for these charities will keep us going against the headwinds and up the never-ending hills. As a thank you, I will update my progress on my blog:

http://sporadicobservations.blogspot.com/

I should point out that neither of us are very serious cyclists, so it will hopefully be a life-changing challenge and also even more life-changing for the recipients of the much needed funds. On behalf of the charities, a big thank you in advance!

Mel.
