Why we need your help

Can we talk? Imagine being a child who cannot tell their parents when they are hungry, scared, in pain or simply want a hug or to play; or a young person grappling with the challenges of growing up and yet unable to express their fears and hopes. Both struggle to understand when others talk to them. What would your life be like if you could not relate to those around you - family, friends, or at work?

Speech, language and communication underpin everything we do: making our needs known; expressing our thoughts and emotions; interacting with others. They are crucial for learning in school, for building and maintaining relationships of every kind, for succeeding in life. Yet, 1.4 million children and young people in the UK today have a language disorder they will not grow out of - that is two or three children in every single classroom. In some areas of deprivation across the UK, as much as 50% of children start school without the language they need for learning (delayed language).

It's a huge challenge, but one we can tackle together - earlier diagnosis and intervention can make all the difference, as so does finding and supporting those young people who might have gone unnoticed before. Through all of this, we never forget the parents and families who are struggling to care and advocate for their child.

Whether you are running for I CAN or supporting someone who is, you can help children with SLCN find their voice.
