DCF Race-Running Campaign
Why we need your help
We are thrilled to be working with Total Children’s Therapy and the Para-Athletic Coach from Poole Athletics Club to set up a Race-running club. This opportunity will be available to all our little athletes with physical difficulties who wouldn’t normally be able to take part in a running race, but who would like to give it a go.
We are looking to gain funding that would allow us to purchase and maintain the running-bikes, as well as store them. This would also allow the children to travel up and down the country competing with other clubs, so they can experience the fun of competing with other children as part of a team. Not only will the children be out enjoying themselves, they will be working together to make friends and improving their teamwork and communication.
Race running is an innovative, fun and accessible sport for all ages and mobility levels. The children will use a running bike, which is a three-wheeled frame with a saddle, body support but no pedals. The low centre of gravity and frame design offers stability whilst running or walking, with children in power wheelchairs being able to propel themselves forward. The saddle unit also acts as a seat, so the children are then safe to sit and rest after all their fun. As a result of this the children will be able to take part in activities that were once out of reach, as well as improving their physical fitness and self-esteem.
It’s just been accepted as an official Para-athletic sport, so you never know, the sky’s the limit!
