The Virtual Uganda Marathon 2021

Why we need your help

The Virtual Uganda Marathon 2020!

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and to protect the local Masaka community, we have postponed the 2020 Uganda Marathon to June 2021.
However, just because we aren't able to gather on Liberation Square on 30th May 2020 to take part in A Race Like No Other! Does not mean that we can't take a few hours to celebrate the spirit of the Uganda Marathon by walking, jogging or running as far as you safely can - coming together alongside the community in Uganda as well as the hundreds of people around the world who have been part of creating an incredible legacy there.
And so... The Uganda Marathon 2020 will take place as a virtual event.

Wherever you are in the world, join The Masaka Runners Club, runners from the last five Uganda Marathons, and our partners, to walk, jog, or run as far as you safely can. If you can’t get out to run, then take on a challenge in your own home - 262 sit ups, anyone?
Then, share your sweaty selfies on 30th May with the hashtag #UgandaMarathon2020, and be part of the 2020 Virtual Uganda Marathon.

Entry is by voluntary donation of £10 - please add gift aid if you are eligible! You can also buy a limited edition 2020 Uganda Marathon race t shirt here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/UgandaMarathon/shop/?ref=page_internal - stocks are limited and there will be no more when we run out!

Since we announced the postponement of the event in March, The Uganda Marathon, alongside EcoBrix, has been working tirelessly to help the people of Masaka pull through this incredibly difficult time.
Much like many countries around the world, Uganda has gone into lockdown with almost all businesses ceasing overnight. Without necessary trade to keep a local economy moving, families are unable to generate a daily income to buy food, and with no government safety net, many people across Masaka and the surrounding areas are facing the genuine prospect of starvation.
On top of this, the local hospital in Masaka is desperately underprepared for this crisis. Without any ventilators, minimal PPE and no public hand washing stations, they need our help.
Since this began, The Uganda Marathon & EcoBrix teams have turned their energy to these twin crises. We have been distributing food to families who are unable to support themselves during these times, and supporting the hospital with hygene and PPE equipment.

The incredible donations that have been generously given to support this appeal have made a huge difference, but lockdown is still in place across Uganda and so we need to keep going. All the money that is raised by the 2020 Virtual Uganda Marathon will go to our CoronaVirus appeal, which is saving lives across Masaka.

The Uganda Marathon is back!

Wherever you are in the world, join in and run with Uganda on Saturday June 5th 2021, in the Virtual Uganda Marathon 2021

Unfortunately, due to you-know-what, we have postponed the 2021 Uganda Marathon to June 2022.

However, just because we aren't able to gather on Liberation Square on 5th June 2021 to take part in A Race Like No Other! does not mean that we can't take a few hours to celebrate the spirit of the Uganda Marathon, and help Uganda recover from the damage from Covid.

You can walk, jog or run as far as you safely can on 5th June - coming together alongside the community in Uganda and the hundreds of people around the world who have run and left their legacy in Masaka in years gone by.

Since March 2020, The Uganda Marathon has been dedicated to funding relief efforts across Masaka. With the support of brilliant runners from across the world - alongside EcoBrix (one of our most important local partners) - together you have:

  • funded food parcels for over 3,000 families,
  • built two 22 bed covid isolation wards at the regional hospital,
  • equipped all 14 outlying medical clinics with sanitary equipment and PPE,
  • provided emergency income support to dozens of families.

Now this year, the work continues - the main need is to get children back into schools and pay their school and exam fees. Children in Key Exam years are currently stuggling to take their exams. Lockdown means their families have been unable to work, so they can't afford to pay the small fees all schools require per pupil. Nor can the schools themselves afford to pay government examination fees or the new mandatory PPE for teachers and classrooms.

It's a catch-22 and we're committed to doing what it takes to ensure children - especially those about to finish school - can take their final exams, and not leave education empty handed. Especially in this job market and economic climate.

Wherever you are in the world, join The Masaka Runners Club, runners from the last six Uganda Marathons, and our partners, to walk, jog, or run as far as you safely can. If you can’t get out to run, then take on a challenge in your own home - 262 sit ups, anyone?

Then, share your sweaty selfies via social media on 5th June with the hashtag #UgandaMarathon2021, and be part of the 2021 Virtual Uganda Marathon.

Entry is by voluntary donation of minimum £10 - though you can enter by choosing any of the donation options below! (please add gift aid if you are a UK taxpayer)

In 2018, the community of Masaka touched our hearts. Grateful to the UGM and Youth with a Vision teams for keeping in touch until we have the chance to meet again. T-shirt on and ready to walk with you in spirit if not side by side this year.
