Street Stray Mums & Puppies
Why we need your help
Healing Paws is desperate and looking to raise some extra funds as we have recently taken in a number of some stray mums who have given birth on the streets. Due to the Covid 19 crisis, we cannot move the animals who have homes to go to, so we have extra mouths to feed as well as, all the flea and worm treatments, of which we have appealed for previously, we are still struggling.
Since 1st March, just over 8 weeks we have taken in total 84 Puppies and 9 adults. We just cannot continue as we are. It is not only the room but the extra money we have to find whilst dogs cannot leave to their new homes.
The new mums and pups also cost us a great deal of money as each mum must have a good quality diet with lots of protein to enable them to raise their puppies they best they can.
Then there is the vaccinations which each puppy and mum must receive. They need 3 each at a cost of £20 per vaccination. So you can see that each family are going to cost the small charity a great deal of money, which is why we need to appeal sadly. Let me introduce you to the mums and pups
One such scared mum had 10 puppies and Sue took her in although the mum is scared she is aggressive and Sue can get nowhere near her. She is safe but its an impossible situation for all concerned.
Another such mum is Lilac who was taken in heavily pregnant and gave birth on 7th April to 9 puppies. Sadly 5 died. Why we do not know, sometimes it is just nature and she now has 4 roly poly's which are doing very well. One of each colour !
Then there is Cindy a gorgeous pure breed setter who gave birth to her puppies on the streets. How many there was originally we are not sure but she has 6 now in our care.
Then there is Mary who gave birth to 13 puppies on the streets. A man found them and took them to his father's farm. Sadly 2 died when we went to collect the next day.
More worrying we have had calls about another poor setter girl who has given birth in the rots of an olive tree. Currently we have no where for them despite appeals for help on the island, no one has come forward to help us. With dogs not moving we are not going to have room any time soon. The only thing we can do is ask the ladies who notified us to try to gain her trust as currently she too is also scared and even if we could find room or someone offers to help, the pups are too young to leave their mum so we need to be able to take mum and pups.
So you can see for the ones we have already, vaccinations alone run into a couple of thousand that is without food and any other treatment.
At the time of writing this we have taken in another 5 puppies. These are the pups from the poor scared setter mum I wrote about above. It is NOT an ideal situation in any form as they are too young to have left their mum BUT mum had moved the pups and the lady feeding them was worried she would move them again and they would be lost and die. They are actually full of worms and covered in fleas. Outside of parvo these ae the biggest killer of such young puppies so they would most likley have died anyway and even now in our care the outlook is not guaranteed. Just goes to show what a bad state the poor mum is in. In an ideal world we would have taken her too but she is so scared she cannot be caught at this time. However the lady will continue to feed in the hope she can gain her trust.
