Covid-19 Response - Meals for Families

Why we need your help

Will you help us provide emergency food hampers to the most vulnerable children in our community?

Urgent action is required as we know 1000 children will not receive a school meal or government Free School Meal funding during the May Bank holiday week.

£10 will provide a food hamper for the week

The hampers will be delivered to families who normally receive free school meals at our primary schools (Hallam, Hillsborough, Meynell, Southey Green and Wisewood) and our secondary schools (Bradfield, Chaucer, Forge Valley and Tapton).

We are providing the staffing for catering, making up hampers and delivery for the May Half Term holiday - our suport staff and teachers are volunteering to pack and deliver the hampers.   We are looking for funding for the food.

Many of our students are dependent on school meals for their food and whilst they are not in school they may not be getting a meal. Government is providing funding in term time but not during the holidays.

We provided 900 meals at Easter via Sheffield City Council. For May Bank Holiday week as a Trust we are looking to provide a hamper to each free school meal family that requests one.

Food Requirements in Sheffield

In the week beginning 20th April, for example, the network of food banks and other voluntary sector emergency food provision in the city provided food to 1,464 households (28% up on the previous week). This was 1 in every 157 households in the city (up from 1 in 200 households in the previous week). This does not include Sheffield City Council deliveries, Free School Meal vouchers or the multitude of small food initiatives that are popping up – including those organised by some schools.

Emerging Vulnerabilities · Access to Food

Some families (including some who had not previously been classed as vulnerable or in receipt of Free School Meals) do not have enough food and supplies. This is reflected in some schools reporting a 10% increase in children eligible for Free School Meals. Many of these families have not previously had experience of accessing the benefit system or other sources of support.
