COVID-19 Food Appeal for Mityana

Why we need your help

Our COVID-19 Food Appeal is asking for donations to provide food to some of the most desperate clergy in Mityana who do not have their own gardens to grow their own food – and with churches closed, have no income at all. We have received news from Mityana that things are very tough, with some basic necessities having increased in price by up to 400% (salt, for example).

Food appeal

Target

Our overall target is £4,500. That is enough to support around 1,000 people - clergy, their families and wider communities - for approximately 3 - 4 weeks.

COVID-19 in Uganda

So far, the Coronavirus has not had a significant impact on Uganda, but unfortunately with vehicles coming from both Tanzania and Kenya, it is likely to reach outlying communities as well as towns and cities. Lockdown and night curfew are in operation. Everyone currently has to wear a face mask. With schools closed, all children are at home, so families have to find food for everyone; the families who had two meals a day are down to one – and the families who only ate once a day are now having something to eat every second day.

Helping communities

We wonder if you might be able to help with a gift of money so that these families are able to eat at least one meal a day of maize porridge. As you may be aware, clergy often have to share what they have with the poorest in their communities, so our donations will be helping more than just the immediate family.

We are very aware of how difficult it is for some families in the UK. But we have food banks, charities and other organisations who can help. People in Mityana have nothing.

Suggested donations and what they will buy.

To offer the most help to the families we will be supporting our donations will cover maize porridge for a week to ten days

£5 or £10 will support a family of four or eight respectively.

£15 or £30 will support them for two to three weeks

£50 will support them for a month

£60 - £100 would enable us to help their extended families and others in the community.

In the first instance we have 94 families who need our help immediately.

Some of the clergy your donations will help

Rev Stephen’s home in Kibubula is next to the school and this parish is linked with Overton.  It is very poor and many homes lack even the most basics.

Rev Simon Peter’s district is very far from Mityana, but has towns where the clergy have no opportunity to grow food. The tap on the tank which the school shares with the community is broken.

Bishop James has not been able to get to know the diocese because he has been in lockdown almost the whole time since his appointment in March.

Thank you for any amount you may be able to donate to help feed the clergy of Mityana and their communities.
