Chapel Renovation

Why we need your help

A view of Hook Norton's Georgian Baptist Chapel

Our lovely Georgian chapel has graced Hook Norton for nearly 250 years now, and is showing many signs of its age. Over the years many changes have been made, not always sympathetic or for the best.

A full fabric condition survey was carried out in November 2015 that revealed a long list of urgent and less urgent works. As a result an architect was appointed and a number of detailed surveys were undertaken.

The chapel is Grade II listed, is in the Hook Norton Conservation Area and we now have the Certificate of Authorisation for the proposed works. Our Architect has structured the works into three phases.

Phase 1 covers all the essential external works including rainwater drainage, removing the sources of damp on the south wall and at ground level, and includes stonework repairs. We will also complete the enclosure of the porch and replace the internal and external doors to meet modern fire regulations.

Phase 2 includes a major internal restoration, removing the 20th century wooden floor to create a level surface and removing trip hazards that resulted from removal of the Victorian pews 50 years ago. We will take the opportunity to install an air source heat pump and underfloor heating that will significantly reduce our electricity costs. The small 20th century baptistery will be replaced. The walls will be restored with lime plastering and appropriate paints. We hope to recreate as far as possible the original Georgian character of the interior and introduce a sensitive lighting scheme.

When funds allow, Phase 3 will restore and renew the Georgian west balcony and seating, and make safe and usable the Victorian north and south balconies. Secondary glazing will be added, and internal painting and decorations will be completed.
