Why we need your help

About us

St Andrew Boat Club is Edinburgh’s oldest and only open rowing club. Our motto is ‘Rowing for All’ and we take pride in offering access to anyone interested in sport from age 12 upwards. Currently the club has 130 active members, including a thriving junior section, senior men’s and women’s squads, a Masters (veteran) rowing squad and Learn-to-Row group. St Andrew has produced many international class athletes, with proud alumnae including Dame Katherine Grainger and Sinéad Jennings Lynch.

The project

We are fundraising for the costs of a new boathouse. Our boathouse has stood on its current site since 1983, when we operated with a much smaller membership, and it is no longer fit for purpose in delivering our aims of Rowing for All in our local community. A new boathouse will be constructed on land leased from the City of Edinburgh Council on the same plot, and will provide space for boats and equipment sufficient to accommodate our expanding membership, as well as a much-needed area for land-based training. Planning permission and a lease have been secured, and construction is due to commence in winter 2020.

The new facility will allow us to nurture talent across all age categories while continuing a heritage of race training on Edinburgh's Union Canal to compete in the sport nationwide. The increased space will allow us to open up more opportunities to people in our community who would not otherwise have access to the sport through indoor training equipment and a larger fleet of boats suited to all ages and abilities.

How you can help

We have an ambitious fundraising target of £650,000 and any support you can offer will make a difference. Through the generosity of a local charitable trust, every £1 raised will be matched by a further £2 so your donation can go even further.

There are a few ways you can help us achieve our vision of Rowing for All...

  • Make a direct or recurring donation to St Andrew Boat Club
Donations will go directly towards the boathouse fund, and if eligible for Gift Aid you can boost your donation by 25%.
  • Buy a Brick or a Foundation Stone
Buy your stake in the new boathouse! There are 100 Bricks available at £100 each and 20 Foundation Stones at £250 each. The names of donors who wish to be acknowledged will be recorded in the new boathouse. Please contact for further details.
  • Sign up to Easy Fundraising
Raise money at no cost to yourself by signing up to Easy Fundraising and nominating St Andrew as your cause. Each time you shop online, a % of your payment will be donated to St Andrew Boat Club.
