KORI 2020 Appeal

Why we need your help

KORI was founded 18 years ago to create a haven for African and Caribbean youth to flourish. Based in Haringey, we used youth work, the arts and travel as our main tools to create community and give support. We are so proud of our young people and what they have achieved, many of whom are now successful creative adults in their own right.

KORI and our work has evolved over time, but there is still so much more work to do.

We know that young black people’s futures are worth investing in, but finding the funding for this has been a huge challenge. That is why today, we need your help to continue investing in our youth.

This October many young black people still need our support. They have been disproportionately hit by coronavirus on every level, from losing relatives to missing out on education. We need to enable them to thrive beyond this time. KORI’s core work is the provision of counselling, mentoring and respite especially essential as this challenging year continues and the demand for our services continues to drastically increase.

This appeal will help us to reach more young people across London in this time of crisis, so that we can support and nurture them, building their resilience as they move forward.

Here’s how your donation could help:

£20 could cover one hour of counselling for a young person who would not otherwise be able to afford it

£100 could pay for a youth worker to spend one day giving our most vulnerable and hard to reach young people one to one support, either online or with socially distanced meetings

£180 could pay for online or social distanced training for 12 young people to learn essential life skills such as how to improve and build their personal finances.

We deliver three programmes:

KORI Mentors

Equipping young people through support and life skills

(14-30 year olds)

Based on 18 years of experience we deliver Industry and pastoral mentoring providing training; organising work placements with partner companies, teaching coaching strategies, recruiting, training and monitoring mentors from the community and running a programme of workshops led by young black professionals for career inspiration in schools Pan-London.

KYAN - KORI Youth Advocacy Network

Continued Personal and Professional development

(16-30 year olds)

A growing youth led network, providing a prominent platform for young people to benefit through involvement in projects, paid work, training and volunteering opportunities, growing through experiences that add positive value to their present and future.

We also run short respite trips to the countryside for young people, as well as providing quick access to affordable counselling and alternative health practitioners.

The Vessel UK

(16+ year olds)

Training programme for UK participants

Since 2004 The Vessel UK Training programme prepares individuals and organisations sourced mainly from Universities and Colleges, to create socially responsible and sustainable projects that they then deliver for their peers in Africa. Over the year’s projects have been delivered in Tanzania, Kenya and Gambia. The projects directly respond to needs that have been researched or requested.

We run this work in direct partnership with the ‘Daughters of Africa Foundation’, which we co-founded in The Gambia:

The breakout of coronavirus has made raising funds even more of a challenge. We have lost £37, 000 worth of income because of cancelled projects. This has left us existing as a small team without salaries through lockdown, whilst focussed on the needs of young people. Despite this we have run a number of online workshops, organised mentoring and kept 73 young people engaged and supported while we also applied ourselves to fundraising. One example of the support we have been offering is our holistic support of a 24-year-old refugee, fighting depression, health challenges and housing issues. We have also been working with 20 young women as a group who are dealing with the challenge of having uncertain academic and work futures whilst dealing with the sea-saw of lockdown and the needs of their families.

All the funds that we raise will stabilise the organisation whilst we continue to work with young people who need our support and seek out more funding opportunities. It will provide and enable us the time to continue to support and develop around the startling growing needs of young black people in the capital in these trying times.
