Lexi's Ear Operation

Lexi's Ear Operation

Why we need your help

Sweet Lexi was brought into the RSPCA Coventry in January 2021 by an Inspector who had found her in conditions where she had been left largely to care for herself.

Lexi was found to have a chronic ear condition that, had it been treated in its early stages, would not have progressed to causing the chronic pain and severe discomfort it was. The condition left Lexi scratching at her ears and crying as there was no relief from the constant pain and soreness.

Multiple vet visits and many tablets that were tried to ease the condition and to make Lexi more comfortable but were found to have little effect. Lexi’s ears are so swollen and damaged through none treatment of infection that the ear canal itself is virtually closed. This means that any drops won’t penetrate to where they need to treat. This has also left Lexi partially deaf, the operation won’t restore her hearing, in fact it will make her completely deaf but there will be no more pain and torment for her to go through with her ears.

It has been decided that unfortunately Lexi's condition cannot successfully be treated with medication and that the only real option is major surgery to remove her ear canals on both sides.  The type of surgery needed is called TECA, the term TECA-BO is an abbreviation for Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy. This surgery involves the complete removal of the ear canal and tympanic bulla (middle ear), leaving only the ear flap (pinna) remaining.

As you can see from her pictures Lexi has had her ears cropped which means that surgery will be additionally challenging and will increase the risk of infection afterwards. It is a popular misconception that cropping ears will prevent ear infections, but Lexi is proof that this is a myth and has had her ears cropped potentially very painfully for no reason.

Lexi is currently in a foster home and is receiving the best care before her surgery. Lexi has shown herself to be nothing but loving, playful and very affectionate. She loves her toys and nothing more than cuddles, tummy rubs and to curl up and have a snooze with her favourite toy.

Lexi's treatment is estimated to cost £2500; this amount will be charged to the RSPCA Coventry & District Branch. If we get any donations over this amount, they will be reallocated to other animals needing vet help. Our centre is an independently funded Centre to the National RSPCA which means we receive no government funding and only a small percentage from the National RSPCA, everything else we need to raise ourselves. This is where we need your help! Can you help us raise the money for Lexi’s surgery to give her the lease of life she so desperately deserves after such a poor start in life?
