Why we need your help

Osmani Foodbank Ramadan Iftar Appeal

We urgently need your support to keep providing severely disadvantage families throughout Ramadan with emergency food packs that will also contain Iftar items.

Once a week we provide vital food supplies to families who have been heavily impacted by COVID-19 and restrictions (furloughed, lost income, or made unemployed).  The majority are BAME families, women, and newly arrived families who are struggling to make ends meet.

We serve

  • Up to 300 unique individuals/families with essential food packs every week, each month the demand is growing
  • 15-20 food packs are delivered to those who are homebound or disabled
  • 1200 family members including children and the elderly are supported every week
  • Majority of our beneficiaries are from the BAME communities, on low income, basic benefits or have no entitlements to state benefits

Impact of COVID-19 on local BAME communities

  • The pandemic exposed and exacerbated longstanding inequalities affecting BAME groups in the UK
  • Unemployment and deprivation rates pre COVID-19 was higher than wider population – now made worse with traditional BAME occupations/sectors closed down
  • Bangladeshis have twice the risk of dying after COVID-19 compared to White counterparts resulting in higher bereavement impacts on families
  • Higher death rates across all BAME groups
  • Individuals from BAME groups are more likely to work in occupations with a higher risk of COVID-19 exposure
  • Overcrowded social housing –  harder to stay at home, higher risks of transmission amongst larger families
  • Historic racism and poorer experiences of healthcare or at work may mean that individuals in BAME groups are less likely to seek care when needed

Tower Hamlets Demographics

  • 10th most deprived local authority in UK
  • 1 in 4 households live below poverty line
  • High BAME population (57%), 33% Bangladeshi
  • Highest levels of child poverty in England
  • 40% live in social rented accommodation
  • 9,000 families experience overcrowding
