Friends of Respond

Why we need your help

‘I feel powerful now… I won’t let it happen again’ – a young woman who was sexually exploited and gang raped and referred to Respond aged 15 years.

‘[His mother said] that the changes she observed since her son start attending the therapy with Respond were amazing. Her son opened himself for relationships, as if he opened the box he was in and started letting others in so she could start seeing him at last.’ – a young man with learning disabilities supported by Respond.

At RESPOND we work with some of the most vulnerable at-risk children and adults with learning disabilities in the UK. RESPOND helps them heal through psychotherapy, advocacy support and campaigning. RESPOND is determined to protect children and young people with learning disabilities and their families, to help them recover from the hurt and stop more abuse from happening.

Since 1991, RESPOND has been helping children and young people with learning disabilities, some as young as five years old, and their families. The journey to recovery can take a long time and RESPOND is there every step of the way. RESPOND’s support shines light into the dark world of the abused and sees them achieve more than they ever thought possible.

We are asking individual donors, and families with young people over 18 years, to become a Friend of Respond to forge a deeper connection with our work and those who rely on us. For all our Friends who have young family members over the age of 18, Respond offers volunteering and placement opportunities.

RESPOND is inviting donors to make a three year commitment to enable us to be financially stable and develop sustainable, innovative services. 97% of our income goes on our services. £1,000 will help us to deliver abuse training for 50 professionals, family members and teachers working with young people with learning disabilities, £5,000 provides ten child victims of sexual abuse with three months of individual therapy and £9,000 provides a Child Sexual Abuse clinic for five children over one year.
