Food Crisis in Malawi

Food Crisis in Malawi

Why we need your help

Malawi is currently experiencing its worst food crisis since 2002. The community of Nkhata Bay North, which Temwa serves is no exception. Reports have informed us that families were so desperate for food they were boiling mangoes to give to their children as porridge, and some of our recently trained potato producers were even feeding their children the potato seed that had been distributed.

The situation is only set to worsen. The World Food Programme has already estimated that this year 14 million people throughout southern Africa will go hungry. They report that Malawi is the worst affected by the droughts, which are a result of El Nino and continued effects of climate change. Reports estimate that 16% of the population here faces starvation. With crops failing, there will be no food or income for many households throughout Nkhata Bay North this year.

The plight of these communities is further exacerbated by a recent outbreak of cholera in the region and the continued increase of inflation, which seems set to spiral out of control.  Jo Hook, Co-founder and Managing Director, who is currently in Malawi, has commented: ‘In my 20 years of coming to Malawi I have not seen the situation as bad as it is now’.

Temwa cannot stand back and watch communities starve. Although a sustainable development organization, we are looking to raise funds to support our communities through this current crisis. Anything that you can spare will help to save lives amongst the communities of Nkhata Bay North.

Thank you.

Pleased to support your invaluable work after my son stayed in Nkhata Bay early this year and experienced optimism and poverty in equal measure
