Ride of the Lions - Waterloo 200 Ride
Why we need your help
Running in conjunction with The New Waterloo Dispatch (NWD) ROTL are organising a charity bike ride to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. Whilst the NWD will re-enact the journey Major Percy made, at the behest of Wellington, back to London with the news of the victory, 200 cyclists will make the approx. 200 mile journey from the Wellington Museum at Waterloo back to St James’s Square, London over 2 days.
The 200 riders will be joined by 16 British & Irish Lions and 4 WWTW injured service personnel and be spread across the 4 riding groups before hopefully joining one peloton for the last few miles into the finish and a deserved drinks reception. Winterbottom, Uttley, Teague, Richards, Charvis, Chalmers, Henderson are just some of the names joining us and representing all 4 nations of the Lions. We expect some more big names to commit soon.
Leaving Cobham, Surrey on June 18 the 200 riders and accompanying crew will travel to Brussels and experience some of the commemorations going on before dining and staying en masse at the Thon Hotel, Brussels. Early on June 19th riders will be ferried to the Wellington Museum, where their bikes will be set up and in 4 groups will set off for the ferry at Dunkirk. That evening they will have board and lodging at The Duke of York Military School, Dover.
On the morning of June 20th, the riders will set off in groups for Blackheath/Greenwich where the plan is to assemble all 4 groups into one peloton to cycle the last stage to St James’s Square (logistics permitting*). Wellington Barracks will be used to store bikes, bags etc whilst the riders have a post ride reception.
