Genetics research

Why we need your help

Fungal Infection Trust supports clinical research projects at the National Aspergillosis Centre in the Manchester, UK.

As one of the only clinical research centres working on aspergillosis in the world NAC is able to sequence the entire genomes of groups of volunteer patients and to look for genetic changes that are consistent with all people who have chronic aspergillosis. If we can find genetic changes like this then we will be able to start to better understand why some people get chronic fungal infections while the vast majority of people do not, despite the fact that we are all breathing in hundreds of Aspergillus spores every day.

This research could:

  • Enable us to identify people who are at risk from infection and prevent it
  • Help understand why some people are vulnerable we may be able to stop the fungus growing and ultimately perhaps even remove it completely

Sequencing entire human genomes is still expensive @ £1000 per person and employing staff with the skills to find the faulty genes in the huge mountain of data generated by genome sequencing is very expensive. Fungal Infection Trust is trying to help raise £150 000 to do this for 100 people with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA).
