AND HERE I AM

PALESTINIAN TOUR 2017/2018

Help Ahmed Tobasi bring his extraordinary story of growing up in war-torn Palestine to young people and refugee communities around Palestine this December.

THE PROJECT

We are raising money to tour the Arabic version of the critically acclaimed theatrical production, AND HERE I AM, around Palestine this December.

AND HERE I AM is a one man show based on the life & experiences of Ahmed Tobasi, a Palestinian refugee, and is performed by Tobasi himself. The production premiered at the Everyman Cheltenham in June 2017, before an extensive UK tour.

The production will open at the Freedom Theatre in Jenin Refugee Camp, Tobasi's hometown, on the 28 December 2017.

Alongside the Palestinian performances, which are free to attend, Tobasi will run a series of workshops with young people in Jenin Refugee Camp.

AND HERE I AM continues our long-term commitment to broaden and deepen skillsets and opportunities within the Palestinian community in Jenin Refugee Camp as a sustainable legacy.

WHO ARE WE?

Developing Artists is a UK registered charity (No: 1121604) working to support the arts in post-conflict nations and deprived communities.

Our projects connect people and institutions in some of the world's most disadvantaged areas with an international network of arts organisations and practitioners. Developing Artists strengthens underprivileged and marginalised communities by providing constructive outlets for their creative life, and transformative long-term opportunities for self-expression and professional development.

Last summer we brought thirteen Syrian Refugee women to the UK from Jordan to perform the critically acclaimed Queens of Syria, a verbatim theatre piece they created from their own real-life stories, interwoven with the narrative of Euripides' The Trojan Women.

AND HERE I AM continues our commitment to bring new refugee voices to international audiences, challenging media stereotypes.

PROJECT AIMS

  • To educate & inform the young people of Palestine, through first hand testimony, about Tobasi's transformation from armed resistance fighter to artist,  and his journey as a refugee from the West Bank to Norway and back again.

  • To provide a platform for a Palestinian actor to make his voice, and that of his community, heard.

  • To create a platform for cultural & political exchange between people from different countries, communities & belief systems, demonstrating a commitment to social engagement where artists & audiences are at the centre of driving change & debate.

WHAT IS YOUR MONEY BEING SPENT ON?

  • To cover production and touring costs so Palestinians are able to watch the performance for free.
  • To fund a series of drama workshops for children in Jenin Refugee Camp.
  • To pay a fee to Ahmed Tobasi, so he can earn a living from his work.
  • To fund a Palestinian apprentice technical manager
