The Henrietta Rose Memorial Fund

Why we need your help

Henrietta Rose, who passed away peacefully on 24th June, 2018, has been a dear friend, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and colleague, loved by so many of us. She was also devoted to Sky Is The Limit Children’s Centre, located in Fort Portal, Western Uganda.

Having been a VSO volunteer in Uganda, Henrietta had a long affinity with the country and its people. She first met the founder of Sky Is The Limit, Rose Mugenyi, and her brother, Richard Tooro, in 2000. They became her dear friends and hosted Henrietta and her family almost every year. Henrietta's son, Tom, stayed with Richard and his family on several occasions and was welcomed at Sky Is The Limit Primary School, where he gave the children an opportunity to learn from his excellent English. Henrietta was always grateful to Rose, Richard, and the whole community at Sky Is The Limit for their care and welcome to Tom.

Henrietta served as a valued and active member on the board of Ecologia Youth Trust for 13 years. Inspired by her passion for Sky Is The Limit, Ecologia began supporting the centre in 2004, helping to recruit child sponors, and securing funding for a range of projects, including its successful free school meals programme. Under our umbrella, Henrietta herself raised thousands of pounds for Sky Is The Limit, to purchase piglets and fruit trees for its organic farm, sink a well for fresh water, build a toilet block (for which, in an innovative fund-raising venture, Henrietta sold loo rolls by the dozen!), and buy classroom furniture and a new truck to transport the children to school.

Ecologia is proud to have played a part in this effort, and to witness the extraordinary results – not least of which included seeing children who had to walk 12 miles to school on an empty stomach becoming bright and energetic, stronger and healthier, after eating a daily nutritious school meal, provided with our help.

In memory of Henrietta Rose, we have set up a Memorial Fund for Sky Is The Limit Children's Centre.

Sky Is The Limit's primary school was originally constructed from bamboo, which makes it vulnerable to the rains and attacks by termites. In memory of Henrietta we wish to rebuild a classroom destroyed by termites last year into a permanent brick structure that will stand the test of time and be a testament to Henrietta’s love and dedication to this small but important school in Uganda.

To achieve this, we aim to raise at least £25,000 for the school to allow Rose to build  a sturdy, brick classroom and enable her to educate the children in her care in a safe and comfortable environment that can support their learning.

About Sky Is The Limit Children's Centre

Sky Is The Limit is located in one of the Uganda’s poorest regions, where research has shown that nearly half of its children have never been to school. A third of the country’s population live in poverty and 2.5 million children are orphans – almost half have lost parents due to HIV/AIDS.

Health worker, Rose Mugenyi founded Sky Is The Limit in 1994. There, she provides a family to approximately 30 children, who live at the centre’s Noah’s Ark, and an education to over 370 children, aged 3-14 years, who attend Sky Is The Limit Primary School.

The school aims to provide all of its students with a well-rounded, holistic education. As well as more traditional subjects, the pupils receive lessons in music, dance and sport, plus training in skills that can provide future employment, such as tailoring, carpentry, and farming (taught at the school’s own organic farm).

Without Sky Is The Limit, the children it supports would be unlikely to attend school because most come from families who are so impoverished they are struggling to feed their children. They cannot afford to buy school uniforms and educational materials - a basic requirement on parents in Uganda, even although primary schooling itself is free - and as a result, their children become effectively excluded from the state education system. In addition, several of the children are known to be living with HIV/AIDS, many have lost one or both parents to the disease, and all have been adversely affected in some way by the impact of the pandemic on their communities.
