Emergency Lifting Chairs

Why we need your help

Falls are defined as ‘an unintentional or unexpected loss of balance resulting in coming to rest on the floor, the ground or an object below knee level’. The impact of a fall on the individual and their family is not to be underestimated, with falls often leading to a fear of falling and potentially having psychological as well as physical effects.

Falls are a leading cause of emergency calls in the over 65’s and account for 10-25% of emergency ambulance responses each year for adults aged over 65 years.  1 in 3 people aged over 65 and up to 1 in 2 aged over 80 will fall at least once every year. By 2025, it is estimated that there will be over 3.2 million falls in people over the age of 65 in England alone.

Community First Responders attend more than 20,000 incidents each year. Their contribution really does save lives, reduce pain and provides reassurance to those requiring emergency care. Operating within the communities in which they live or work, they provide life-saving emergency aid early and ahead of an ambulance arrival.

Trained and governed by the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, the Community First Responders are called on any time, day or night, helping to reach those patients most in need across the 10,000 square miles the ambulance service serves. Our dedicated team of unpaid volunteers give life-saving care ahead of the arrival of an ambulance.

Equipping a Community First Responder with an emergency lifting chair will enable early assistance to a patient who has experienced a non-injury fall, and reduce potential complications associated with long lies. This will also help ensure the most appropriate allocation of emergency services resources.
