Jharkhand Expansion

Why we need your help

Jharkhand is a state in India which was carved out of Bihar state in 2000.  One of the reasons why the state was separated from Bihar was the demand of the tribal people to have their own state.  Tracing back the history, this place had been the home of 5 major tribal groups of the area, Santal, Munda, Ho, Khariya and Oraon.  They wanted to have a separate state because they were deprived and exploited in many ways by the high cast people.  High cast people are the one who came much later to this area and became the rulers of this place.  Though the state is separated, but the condition of the tribal people remains the same because the power of governance is still in the hand of the high cast. Most of them still live in very poor condition in villages.  They are dependent on farming which they only do once in a year.  Due to lack of income they migrate to other places for some months of the year.  This endangers their lives and they get into all kinds of exploitations.  Education of their children suffers in massive way.

The average size of the village is 200 families.  More than 95% of these families are farmers, however they only cultivate one crop per year as they have no irrigation facility.  50% of the tribal populations are living below the poverty line.  Because of poverty, they become victims of human trafficking and many of them drink too much.
