Gary is a retired full Colonel, US Air Force, which included 18 months in Afghanistan and Iraq. As a career Air Force computer systems officer, he served as Country Director for computer systems in both countries. Following retirement in 2012, Gary began his current position as an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii. He is also co-founder and Executive Director for an award-winning nonprofit organization for at-risk youth in Hawaii and served as director of a 24/7 residential program for high school dropouts. An educational psychologist and high school principal earlier in his career, Gary is currently working on his doctorate in education, with a research focus on international education.
Elaine is and has been the owner of a successful health and nutrition business for over 25 years, A Gift of Health. She was owner and operator of two successful health retail stores in Texas, and currently consults and teaches health and nutrition in Hawaii. Gary and Elaine have six children and 16 grandchildren. Elaine stays quite busy between her business, the grandchildren, and tending to their sustainable/organic family farm at their home on the Big Island.
With a passion for and experience helping disadvantaged youth and families, Gary will be assisting with GHNI’s efforts in Asia; during Gary’s many months living there he developed a heart for the amazing resiliency of the children and their families and hopes to make a difference in their lives. He will be serving as a GHNI Assistant Regional Field Leader and is excited to be working for an organization that is at the global front edge in helping the hidden and the hurting.
