Providing Access to Clean Water in Peru

Providing Access to Clean Water in Peru

Why we need your help

With the increase in tourism and demand for water supply for local farming there is an urgent need for water management and conservation efforts in the Cusco area. This project is focused on Water Conservation to improve the lifestyles of the communities that live at the source, the Cusco inhabitants, as well as those that visit this amazing Human Heritage.

The Sub-basin Hatunmayu province of Anta and districts is the source of water of nearly 40% of Cuscos population. The main economic activities around the Piuray Lake are agriculture & sheep farming; both have a direct impact to the lake. Two main issues are water diminution and a growing pressure from the Cusco Water Utility to fulfill the needs of a growing tourist population and new inhabitants.

Infiltration Ditches to retain water, stop erosion and avoid landslides, expected to regenerate wetlands. Protection of Springs by building fences around it. Building recovery terraces, this Inca strategy is still active in the Peruvian Andean populations and has great potential to restores areas for agriculture and lastyly, Reforestation, the key component to strengthen the above strategies - All which require heavy manual labour.
