ENO Opera Squad

Why we need your help

ENO Opera Squad is our flagship learning and participation programme - taking proffessional musicians directly into schools, giving young people their first experience of opera.

Every year, we work with four schools in London, reaching around 5,000 young people.

We create a two-year residency with each school, and begin with a 'take-over' day, involving:

Interactive Assembly

A presenter introduces young people to the elements of opera with singing activities, performances, and a Q&A

Pop Up Performances

In the canteen, the playground, the store cupboard, the staff room – opera singers will appear in the most unexpected places around the school throughout the day.

GCSE & A-level Music and Drama Workshops

Directors and singers work with young people, demonstrating techniques and skills used by professionals that can be incorporated into curriculum work or performance exams.

School Ensemble Workshops

ENO musicians work with school choirs and orchestras, giving them the opportunity to perform opera alongside ENO professionals.

Extended Projects after the take-over day

For each school, we create bespoke projects, such as:

  • Year 9 and 10 Maths and Music composition workshops inspired by Philip Glass operas
  • training to support teachers across a variety of subjects on how to use opera as a springboard for curriculum work
  • musical theatre workshops, supporting in-school rehearsals for their annual musical
  • creating a mini opera based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Benjamin Britten
  • a member of our orchestra adjudicating an in-school concerto competition
  • members of our orchestra delivering a performance masterclass to A-Level music students in preparation for performance exams
  • supporting critical writing skills for students studying English, Drama and Music

By supporting our fundraisers for ENO Opera Squad, you will be directly supporting music and performing arts education across schools in London at a time when school budget cuts are causing a substantial decline.
