Support Comm Mental Health Care Uganda
Why we need your help
We raise money to fund the delivery of mental health care services in Uganda. Initially this was in the communities around Bwindi, Kagando and Kisiizi hospitals in the SW but we have now spread further afield and provided support to nearly 30 hospitals across the country.
Our funds go towards providing mental health training for key health staff, who in turn train staff from their hospitals, raising awareness of mental health issues and creating local teams. These can then be funded to work with local leaders with the aim here being to increase the understanding of mental illness and to reduce stigma in the community.
All three of the initial hospitals that we focussed on embarked on an extension of their mental health services outwards into the surrounding communities. Other hospitals have looked to do likewise. Local staff are recruited or redeployed while hospitals may plan to hold more clinics and to carry out home visits.
The aim is to reduce dependency on hospital visits for treatment and significantly increase the quality and accessibility of services. Attendance at hospital is often costly and requires travel over significant distances with poor transport links.
We also provide funding to enable health staff to qualify as Psychiatric Clinical Officers.
