Why we need your help

Here at Turas we exist to encourage and help people to learn Irish- no matter what their background.

The majority of our learners are from the Protestant community and in comparison to their Catholic classmates are often, but not always, at a disadvantage.

Why is this the case?

The majority of Protestants will not have prior knowledge of even very basic Irish and tend to only get the opportunity to engage with the language late in life. Very few get the option of studying the language at school (not all Catholic schools offer Irish as a subject). They don’t hear it in prayers. They don’t see it in signage in their areas. They don’t have friends or relatives who speak the language. They are coming from a very low base.
Added to this is the fact that many of them feel that they are leaving themselves open to criticism because of their engagement with Irish. They are often aware that they don’t have support from their family members, friends, churches or community. So for these people making the journey from gan focal (without a word) to líofa (fluent) can be very arduous.

That’s why we have set up a scholarship scheme to help those who make it through the early stages to further their study and  go on to university. We want to see as many Protestants as possible undertake Irish language diplomas and degrees. We want to see more and more members of the unionist community achieving qualifications and obtaining jobs within the Irish language sector. Overall, we think this will be good for the language and for Northern Ireland.

At present it is unionist politicians who are blocking language legislation in Northern Ireland because they believe a language act would discriminate against members of the Protestant community - if we can help more and more people from a unionist or protestant background to begin and develop an educuation in Irish language, this would simply not be the case.

What do we need?

Any help to fund these students would be greatly appreciated. We wish to support these particular learners and to encourage others to follow their lead. We also believe that if we educate people they will then support the learning of others.
