4 Classrooms in Bobo
Why we need your help
Four school classrooms urgently need to be built for September at La Bonne Nouvelle School
Danny Morris, National Director of International Needs UK:
I have just come back from a monitoring trip and met with the Board of INBF. From discussions with the Board, and seeing with my own eyes, there is an urgent challenge that this community now faces. Bobo is a city that had a population of 600,000 ten years ago. It now exceeds 1.5 million. Increased numbers of families migrating to the community means that many more children are searching for school places. However, recently in the poorest suburbs of Bobo, unlicensed schools have been operating, taking advantage of poor people. These schools take money but have no interest in providing quality education.Class sizes in these schools can reach up to 200 pupils.
Last year the government shut down 71 of these unlicensed schools displacing thousands of students. The Ministry of Education asked La Bonne Nouvelle School to take on an additional 140 paid places with a commitment to fund their school fees for four years. There is pressure on the school to help yet we don’t want to sacrifice offering these children a quality education. This September the school may attract nearly 700 pupils, increasing its capacity by 30%! To avoid overcrowded classes we urgently need to build another four classrooms.
Can you help? The project will cost £60,000, that's £15,000 to build and equip each classroom for 40 pupils. Please help so that we can get these classrooms completed before term begins in September.
Together we will be able to include more children in quality education.
