Contaminated Blood Memorial

Why we need your help

We would like your help in creating a lasting memorial to those who received contaminated blood or blood products in the course of medical treatment.

This occurred through people being given blood or blood products for bleeding disorders, such as haemophilia, or through transfusion. Those affected were infected with hepatitis C virus and/or HIV.

The people affected were often left with huge health issues and many have lost their lives prematurely as a result of having been given contaminated blood or blood products.

478 people in Scotland with bleeding disorders, including many children, were exposed to blood-borne pathogens including hepatitis C. Of these at least 60 were also infected with HIV.

About 2,500 people who received blood transfusions were also infected - anyone who received a blood transfusion before 1991 was at risk of infection. Those infected are a complete cross-section of society, from the car-crash survivor to the mother who received a blood transfusion at the birth of her child.

By March 2015, there were only 471 survivors of the estimated 2,500 known cases of blood transfusion infection in Scotland.

We are the family and friends of those infected.  And we want to establish a memorial in Scotland to those infected in this tragedy. A reminder of not only the lives needlessly lost, but of their battles so bravely fought. This structure is to remember those we have lost, but it is also to recognise that this happened, and those alive who are still bravely dealing with the consequences of being infected.

We seek your support in creating something beautiful, evocative and having significance for all those involved, and for the public to access. Please help us make this memorial a reality.

In memory of Philip Dolan with sincere condolences to Shiela and family. Philip was a tenacious advocate who will be remembered fondly for his unfailing campaigning on behalf of the haemophilia and infected blood community. May he rest in peace.

There needs to be a lasting memorial, a reminder of what we were put through. Of lives taken and permanently affected. We didn't ask to be lab rats, or replacement chimps.
