Why we need your help

A huge thank you to everyone who helped to fund the repairs to the spire at Christ Church. Work on the urgent repairs to the spire has been completed. And Highbury Heritage, the output of our community engagement project required by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has been launched.

We appreciate the support of the local community and friends of Christ Church to fund the shortfall. Thank you to Eclectic Voices for the Songs for the Spire fundraising concert - launching our appeal in October 2015. Thank you to Highbury Community Association for the generous donation from fundraising at their AGM in April 2016. And thank you to the Harley Singers for the Spire fundraising concert in November 2016.

Background

In 2014 we noticed that pieces of disintegrating stonework had fallen off the 33 metre high spire, the area at the foot of the bell tower was assessed as a danger to the public and as a safety precaution we installed fencing around it.

At the end of 2015 we received the news of our successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant of £206,000 towards the costs of £312,000 for the project to repair the spire. Since then the costs increased to £355,000.

Work to erect scaffolding around the tower was completed in March 2016. The planned stone repairs and conservation progressed well. However, unexpected serious damage to the corbels was found, giving us a significant additional cost for the repairs. We are grateful to Cloudesley for an emergency grant towards the unexpected repairs.

A Grade II listed building, the church was completed in 1848 and stands at the top of Highbury Fields near Highbury Barn shops.

The iconic spire of Christ Church Highbury has started to crumble and needs major repairs.

We have applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant of about £200,000 to part fund the repairs project estimated at £300,000. We will need the help of the local community and friends of Christ Church to fund the shortfall. Thank you to Eclectic Voices for the Songs for the Spire concert - launching our appeal on 10 October.
