Thank you to everyone who is supporting our campaign!

New Leaf provides a mentoring service for prisoners at the end of their sentences. They are assessed, matched with a suitable mentor and given a planned release package. On release, we often have to provide clothing, as prisoners are given back the unwashed clothes in which they arrived, regardless of the weather conditions! We collect the mentee and it is often the simple things, like being taken for decent breakfast or to their first probation appointment that makes the difference. We also provide a pack of essential provisions to tide them over. In the weeks that follow, we will be in contact to provide the support needed in practical and emotional way.  We have an amazing group of dedicated volunteers who support our work.

Money is an issue:  This service costs us £350 for collection day alone, for each mentee.  Mentees are typically released with a discharge grant of only £46, which was fixed in the 1990s (and had it been increased would still only be worth around £83 today).  There is a further, discretionary grant of £50 for accommodation, negotiated individually - and of course, a job and any benefits frequently take a considerable time to organise and come through.

Family Matters works from the moment of the sentence in Court, by providing vulnerable family members with information, support and resources to establish a normal routine again. We aim to maintain family links and relationships during the sentence. This is done through re-establishing contacts, prison visits and providing support services in the community.
Raising Funds and Awareness!  UPDATE:

We will be running a number of activities as part of the campaign.  Due to the heat, we have decided to curtail the remainder of this week's proposed activity - a sponsored walk by Tim Jenns' - he is fine but we have to be responsible and have taken medical advice. However we will complete the walking in August/September when  several of us will take the offender/mentees Walk – from Magistrates to Crown Court, to Aylesbury YOI, to Waddesdon Manor (who support mentees with employment and accommodation issues wonderfully) and on to HMP Bullingdon and HMP Spring Hill.   In the meantime excellent news of a collaboration with HMP Rochester –  to support mentee offenders across area boundaries – more info to follow!
