MS-UK are raising money to fund a new Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike for its wellness centre Josephs Court in Colchester, Essex.

What is an FES bike?

An FES bike creates patterned movement of the arms or legs, enabling the muscles to work and perform active cycling even if the client has lost voluntary control of those muscles.

Please watch this video to find out more

What are the benefits of an FES bike for someone with multiple sclerosis?

  • Relaxes muscle spasms
  • Prevents or delays disuse atrophy
  • Increases the local blood circulation
  • Maintains or increases the range of motion
  • Maintains bone density

Why do we need one?

The FES bike is excellent for people with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions to gain movement in muscles that they may not have the function to exercise themselves.

At Josephs Court we have been using an FES bike to help our clients regain some strength and fitness in their legs and muscles. However the machine is 20 years old, the software regularly fails and the arm crank doesn't work. This means the system doesn't work as well as it could and the machine doesn't provide a benefit for the upper body.

We are now fundraising to help buy a new bike so we can once again provide the service to our clients.
