FNF London Marathon 2020

Why we need your help

Chief Nursing Officer for England Ruth May and CEO of Florence Nightingale Foundation Greta Westwood are running the London Marathon 2020 together! Please read their story below and support us.

This year we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth and to mark this special occasion, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated 2020 the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. We decided that one of the best ways to honour Florence and nurses and midwives during 2020 is by getting our trainers on and running the Virgin Money London Marathon in aid of the Florence Nightingale Foundation!

We want to celebrate all that is great about nurses and midwives, and this is one of our ways of saying thank you. Thank you for all that you do and for the profound impact you have on the lives of so many people.

We’re running as proud Florence Nightingale Foundation Alumni ourselves – both nurses (and Greta was also a midwife), whose lives were transformed by the Foundation, which helped to propel our careers. We are indebted to the Foundation for helping us to achieve our potential. Florence Nightingale Foundation scholars go on to become CEOs, Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs), Chief Midwives and others, great leaders in their clinical field. We like to think that Florence would have approved of us taking on such a challenge in her name, and in the name of all her scholars, continuing her legacy.

Money raised will ensure that the foundation continues to support and nurture nursing and midwifery talent through scholarships, empowering them to achieve their full potential. We also hope that by completing this challenge, we will encourage and inspire our nurse and midwife colleagues to mark this special year in some way. Please help us to reach our goal.  Any support for us, is support for the thousands of nurses and midwives working across England and the UK.

On Sunday 4th of April, we will be running for all of us:
