Florence Nightingale White Rose Appeal

Why we need your help

On 12th May 2020 nurses and midwives across the world celebrated the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. To mark this special occasion we are delighted to launch the Florence Nightingale White Rose Appeal.

We want you to help us support nurses and midwives by buying a special e-white rose for £5 in honour of a nurse or midwife who has meant a lot to you or a loved one.

The e-white rose you buy today will transform into part of an actual floral display at Westminster Abbey when we have the opportunity to come together again and give thanks and celebrate Florence’s bicentenary and the contribution of nurses and midwives everywhere.

The Florence Nightingale Foundation has held a commemoration service for Florence Nightingale at Westminster Abbey on, or near her birthday since 1965. We look forward to the day when we can do this again and make the next commemoration service all the more special by including your support in such a special way. Your rose will symbolise your appreciation for nursing and midwifery and hope for all of us.

Your donation of as small as £5 will support nurses and midwives when they need it most. Money raised from the donations of the roses will allow us to continue our vital work developing nurses and midwives. It will also allow us to continue to provide emotional wellbeing support during the Covid-19 outbreak and beyond.

Appeal Ambassador Helena Bonham Carter said: “Buying a white rose is a simple way to honour our  nurses and midwives. We must never forget the sacrifice they make on an everyday basis during this time.”

“This campaign provides a chance for anyone and everyone to thank a particular nurse or midwife who has meant a lot to them. 12 May 2020 marks the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale and this is a way to honour and celebrate her and her legacy that the Foundation has kept alive. Your donation will allow the Foundation to provide vital support to nurses on the frontline  during the pandemic and beyond.”

“Why me? I have a personal connection to Florence Nightingale. My great, great, great grandmother, Joanna, was Florence’s aunt. My great, great uncle, Walter Bonham Carter helped to establish the Florence Nightingale Foundation in 1934. Joanna’s daughter, Hilary Bonham Carter, was arguably her best friend and assistant after the Crimea. I love the idea of continuing to assist the great woman over the centuries. It puts a new slant on  Best Friends Forever!”

“My late father was nursed at home for 24 years by hundreds of different nurses. I’m indebted to everyone of them. That is why I’m buying shedloads of roses!”

As a registered nurse myself I know the stresses and strains on a daily basis that all nurses suffer, but we do it for the love of the job and people! These are extraordinary times and nursing is an extraordinary job. To all my fellow nurses I salute you!
