Headway Surrey Raft Team

Why we need your help

55 minutes, of exhaustion, in 33 degrees, being hit by water bombs and water pistols, mainly submerged, but we didn't sink or swim.

6th across the finishing line and winners of the Ladies Raft Trohphy 2018.  Our sponsorship page will close on 31st August.  Please keep donating.

Sonja Freebody, CEO, Headway Surrey in her spare time is an active member and volunteer coach at the Wey Kayak Club.

Some of the ladies in her group have agreed (after much persuasion!!) to help her construct and paddle a raft in the Guildford Raft Race.

They all know that brain injury can happen at anytime, to anyone, by a road traffic accident, sporting injury, drowning, a stroke, brain tumour and many other ways.  They also know that Headway Surrey is running at a deficit and needs to raise funds to run its services.

The 2018 Raft Race theme is "Heros in History".  We will all be Joan of Arcs.  Over the centuries, women have looked to Joan of Arc as a positive example of a brave and active woman.

The Crew will consist of:

  • Sonja Freebody
  • Lesley Ramsey
  • Maria Brooks
  • Liz Burtenshaw
  • Jacqui Moore
  • Sarah Moore (not related)
  • Linda Baily

Ably assisted in raft building, technical support and male advice by:

  • Andy Freebody
  • Tom Ramsey
  • Les Moore
  • Peter Galloway

At about 12 noon the team will paddle the raft from the Guildford Waterside Centre all the way up the River Wey to Millmead Lock (near Debenhams/ Britannia Pub).

At 2pm the Mayor of Guildford will judge the rafts and crew costumes.

At 3pm the race starts.

At 4pm we will finish with a much needed drink and BBQ at Guildford Waterside Centre.  There will then be a Trophy Presentation and entertainment by the Rock Choir.  More details at

Come and say "Hi" at Millmead Lock and wish us luck.  Or walk along the river and cheer us on.  Or meet us for a final drink at the Guildford Waterside Centre.

We will be shattered by the end of it, so please support us with as much as you can.  We would like to raise £5,000, which would make a great deal of difference to the charity.

Headway Surrey is based in Guildford and was established in 1985.  It is a small local charity supporting people throughout Surrey who have suffered a traumatic or acquired brain injury.  The organisation provides cognitive rehabilitation therapy at their centre or in people's homes allover Surrey.  In addition, we visit Surrey Hospitals and support the families of the brain injured person.  We provide bespoke individual programs to help each individual create new brain pathways around the damaged areas and to live as well as they possibly can with their brain injury.

Please sponsor us with as much as you can.

Thank you.
