Why we need your help

Tony Walker High Sheriff of Derbyshire

Legal Service Collection - 31st January 2021

YMCA Derbyshire is an independent Christian charity that seeks to enable people who are homeless, socially excluded or disadvantaged, to achieve their potential and play a full part in society, regardless of their gender, race, ability or faith.

We have been at the heart of Derbyshire's community since 1847. Our key services include;

Accommodation and Support for people who find themselves temporarily without a place to live. We have 193 bed spaces, 87 on site at our main Campus and a further 106 across our city and county including a mixture of self-contained and shared flats/houses.

Our support services include a whole host of health and wellbeing activities to get our residents mentally and physically active along with dedicated volunteering and work-based learning programmes.

Through our YMCA Key College we provide a range of accredited vocational training courses for young people aged 16-19 and up to 24 for those with an Education Health Care Plan. Predominately supporting young people where mainstream education has not been suitable. We support over 150 students each year.

Our vision is ‘enabling young people and communities to thrive’: so they can fulfil their dreams; have a safe space to learn and grow; feel equipped to belong, contribute and prosper; and feel supported to be active in body, mind and spirit. Together we create places where people flourish.

We know that the Covid-19 pandemic has hit everyone hard. Our young people need additional support now more than ever. We are extremely grateful to Tony Walker, High Sheriff of Derbyshire for choosing us as one of his charities of choice for his year in office. “My theme for the year is to try and help local people, and young people in particular, who for some reason are having a tough time, to fulfil their potential, grow as individuals, be contributing members of society and have a good quality of life. YMCA Derbyshire is a charity that is very close to my heart, I see first hand the work they do to support young people most in need and I am delighted to choose them as one of my chosen charities for my year in office. As part of this I am asking for donations from the upcoming High Sheriff of Derbyshire's Virtual Legal Service from Derby Cathedral on 31st January 2021 to go towards YMCA Derbyshire's changing lives fund. If I can make a small difference, I will feel it has been a worthwhile year”.  Tony Walker, High Sheriff of Derbyshire.

The money raised through our changing lives fund enables our YMCA to continue to provide the vital additional support our young people need to move along their positive pathway. To hear about two young people who we supported along their positive pathway, please click on the links below.
